Life in the Furnace is brutal and not everyone survives. Alex and some friends thought they had found a way out of the prison and have escaped to an underground river where they believe they can find their way out. What they find is that they are now in an even more brutal environment. When they are recaptured, Alex is sent to solitary and his hopes for escape are gone. Until he is befriended by a strange boy who seems to know his way around the underground. Will Alex find a way out this time? Or will things get even worse?

Blue doesn't have any real friends in this small Vermont town and looks forward to summers when a family from the city comes to spend the summer. Nadine and Blue spend the summers together and the two are best friends. But this summer is different. Nadine is different and Blue is afraid that their friendship may not be as important to Nadine as it is to Blue. This is a summer when things are going to change.

And that just may happen to Sadie.

This series has been said to be the Native American counterpart to Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House series. In this entry, Omakayas's son Chickadee is kidnapped and the family set off to find him. He manages to escape from the Ojibwe camp but he is not safe yet. He is taken in by a kind priest in an English settlement. But he finds that the rest of the village may not be so accepting. As his family searches for him, they must leave their old life behind and begin a new one.
